Over the past month, I reviewed several portable power sources. I've looked at portable gas-powered generators and automatic standby generators. Lately, my interest has been moving towards green energy. Specifically, portable power that doesn't require fuel. Even though I live in a reasonably rainy climate, I'm curious about solar power, and I know that many of the readers live in areas with much sunnier climes.

A recent article that discussed the best solar generator for CPAP machines talked about the Yeti Goal Zero and the Jackery Explorer series – two excellent products that I liked. After I posted the article, a good friend suggested that I take a look at the EcoFlow River 370 Power station. I said, okay. I took a close look. And boy, was I ever glad I did.

I guess I was a bit short-sighted because quite frankly, the EcoFlow River 370 deserved to be on that list.

I had never heard of EcoFlo before last week. According to their website , they were founded in 2017 by developers from a drone company who had developed a particular battery that was “lightweight, long-lasting, and most importantly, powerful.”

VERSATILE USE & POWERFUL FUNCTIONS

One of the things that I love about the EcoFlow River 370 is how versatile it is. Its nine outlets allow you to power up to 9 devices at the same time. Whether you purchase one for your home, for camping, or emergency preparedness, there's plenty of power to spare. Its an ideal source for CPAP machines, whether you're on a camping trip or if there's a power outage.

According to the company's website, the EcoFlow River 370 Power station can provide up to 100+ hours of light, 10+ hours of mini fridge use, 30+ smartphone charges, and 5-9 laptop charges or charge an electric guitar for 20+ hours.

SUPER-LIGHTWEIGHT ENERGY STORAGE

The EcoFlow River 370 holds 100,000mAh capacity and delivers 500W of total AC/DC output in an ultra-portable 11-pound power pack. The compact unit is great for camping or for emergency use at home.

– just grab the handle or throw it in the case and go. Pairing with an EcoFlow Solar Panel Charger (not included) to create a solar backup generator when you head off the grid.

HEAT DISSIPATION & ADVANCED THERMAL MANAGEMENT

We all know that batteries can be prone to overheat, which can be a real safety issue. The EcoFlo company has integrated what they call “intelligent thermal management” in the construction of the product. This prevents overheating and thermal runaway, protecting the safety and life cycle of the battery. You can use it in conditions from -4 to 140 F(-20~60℃). If the unit gets outside of this operating range, it will safely and automatically turn itself off.

SOLID PROTECTION

I like the durability of this unit. The EcoFlo company calls it an “Integrated Battery Armor” and claims to have integrated “industry-leading PACK technology armor”. Each battery cell is reinforced, and this helps to ensure the structural integrity of the entire battery. A patented, dual-purpose, four-millimeter-thick aluminum alloy shell protects the battery cells from impact, while simultaneously regulating temperature.

CONCLUSION

In my opinion, two things set the EcoFlow River 370 apart from the competition. And they're pretty significant factors.

One, the case is water-resistant. For me, that's a huge deal when it comes to practical usability. Unlike most portable power stations that I've looked at (like the Yeti Goal Zero and the Jackery Explorer series), the EcoFlow River 370 doesn't need to be used exclusively in dry conditions. Okay, so that doesn't mean you can submerge it in water – it's still a battery after all. But if a little rain gets on it, you should be okay.

Two, the EcoFlow River 370 can charge quite a bit faster than the other solar power stations I've looked at. That's also a huge deal as far as I'm concerned. Because, after all, it's all about power. The company claims that (weather dependant) the recharge time (with two of their 100W solar panels) is less than three hours. That's pretty amazing.
