Best Solar Generator for CPAP. Here are 2 Great Choices

For the past two decades, I've used a CPAP machine every night. I've got pretty severe sleep apnea. I need my CPAP and I can't sleep without one. Under most normal conditions, it's not a problem. I just plug it into the wall and go to sleep. Over the years, I've had a few problems with intermittent power outages and I've lost the power supply. It's been a huge pain in the ass because obviously without power, the CPAP machine won't work and then I can't sleep. But I've been really lucky for the most part. In 20 years, the power has never been off for more than about ten hours continuously.

That doesn't mean it hasn't been really inconvenient. It sure has. Most of the power outages have been while I was at my ski cabin in Washington State. In the winter. We keep talking about getting a generator for our cabin, perhaps even a portable power station gives, us a portable power supply during winter storms. It's an ongoing debate between my wife and I. We're still discussing the merits of a fixed power station as opposed to something more portable.

What is the Solution?

When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.   While a fixed generator or power station hooked up to the cabin would produce an adequate power supply to run my CPAP machine in the event of a power outage, We have also been looking for other options. If we are going to spend some money, it would be nice to have the ability to have a power supply that is portable enough to take on a camping trip. You know, somewhere off-grid where there are no electrical hookups.

One of the cheapest solutions is hooking up a wave inverter to a deep cycle battery. The battery should be a lead-acid deep cycle marine/RV battery. Other battery types and power cells don't really work well for powering a CPAP. So yes, you need one of those expensive deep cycle marine batteries. If you are lucky, there's one in your boat that you can borrow. I've done this myself a few times and it worked alright. But there were a few drawbacks that made it far from ideal.

First, it's bulky as hell, although that's not the end of the world. What's really concerning is that it's fairly unreliable. Yes, you will get a night out of the battery for sure, but depending on the pressure setting (mine is set at 17 and that's high), you might only get one full night before the battery is drained. Then, you'll need to charge it and that can be a huge hassle. You'll have to find an ac outlet somewhere to plug the machine in for a few hours. If you're really off-grid, you'll have to charge it up with some other form of portable power supply.

So How Long will a Deep Cycle Battery run a CPAP?

When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.  The question of how long a deep cycle battery will run a CPAP is complicated. And it depends on a number of factors. As we mentioned, it really depends on the pressure settings on the machine itself. For example, my CPAP is set at 17, so I am using more power than my wife's friend, who has hers set at 5. She might get twice as much time before needing a recharge. But in any event, if you are camping for more than two days, you're going to need to find a way to recharge that battery.

A second consideration is that you can't just attach your CPAP directly to a deep cycle battery. If you do, you'll damage it and you won't be able to use it. You need to attach an inverter to the battery and plug the CPAP into that first. But not just any inverter will do. Some CPAP machines need to use a Pure Sine Inverter.

What is a Pure Sine Inverter?

When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.   An inverter is a device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). A sine wave is a continuous wave that describes a smooth repetitive oscillation. Conventional AC power is produced by rotating machines and is mathematically described as a sine wave. It is the ideal waveform for the transfer of AC power with very low harmonic distortion.

Pure sine wave inverters produce power which equals or better than the power in a home. It uses sophisticated technology to protect even the most sensitive electronics. It can be used for digital microwaves, televisions, fridges, laptops and other electronic equipment. Pure Sine inverters can power just about any AC appliance without risk of damage.

This is a huge consideration when powering a CPAP machine because you need to remember that it is, after all, a sensitive medical device. So when you can't plug into an ac outlet for whatever reason, it's crucial to have a pure sine inverter.

Other Kinds of Batteries

Most of the CPAP manufacturers produce backup battery systems for their units. These battery backs are designed for emergency power outages and most will have enough power for two nights. Some people like to take them camping because they are lighter. This is not an option for everyone as this type of battery is at least twice as expensive as a deep cycle battery. Another benefit is that some models are FAA approved and can be taken on airplanes. This is helpful for those of us that want to sleep on red-eye flights.

But if you're planning on taking a camping trip with your CPAP machine, let's consider some better options. When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.

What are My Options?

If you are looking to head off on a camping trip sometime soon and want to ensure you have an adequate power supply for your CPAP machine, there are some really good portable power options available. We are really encouraged by the many solar generators on the market right now. We actually reviewed a few over the past month.

Can you run a CPAP machine on a generator?

The short answer is yes. But, it's a bit complicated. When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.  Yes, your gas generator will be more than enough of a power supply to run your CPAP machine all night. That's the tricky part. You'll be using it at night when everybody else at the campsite is trying to sleep. You are bound to piss off a few neighbors.

Many places don't permit generator use between certain hours and there are even some that forbid them completely. So for the most part, if you're going to try and use a generator you'll probably be forced to use it only to recharge batteries.

What is the best solar powered generator for CPAP?

The word best is always a bit subjective. We recently reviewed two green portable power systems, the Jackery Portable Power Station Explorer series and the Yeti-Goal Zero. When you are looking for the best solar generator for CPAP, there are some things to consider.

The Jackery Portable Power Stations feature a standard pure sine wave AC outlet, which gives stable power to a wide range of AC-relied devices, including CPAP machines. The portable power station can be quickly recharged anywhere using a Jackery SolarSaga 100W Solar panel (sold separately) within 14-hrs (in full sun) while living outdoors. It can also be plugged into an AC wall outlet and fully charged within eight hours.

The Yeti Goal Zero 1000 is another great portable power supply option to power your CPAP machine during a power outage or on a camping trip. The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Lithium operates with zero fumes and zero noise for an easy-to-use, plug-and-play way to power all your essential electronics and appliances at the push of a button. It’s safe enough to store inside your home or apartment for running lights or appliances during an emergency power outage, and still durable enough to take along to your next outdoor project.

The Yeti Goal Zero 100 comes with an AC charging cable for recharging in 25 hours from an AC outlet. Pair it with solar panels (sold separately) for a solar generator setup and recharge in as quick as 4.5 hours depending on solar conditions and solar panel array. It also allows for pass-through power, meaning it can simultaneously recharge from solar panels while being used. Pair it with the Goal Zero Boulder 100 Briefcase Monocrystalline Solar Panel.
